When I was weighing the pros and cons of going to law school, a big question I had to ask myself was “is this really worth the investment”? I thought long and hard about taking on an additional $80,000 in student loan debt. Would this benefit my family or be a burden? When it comes to budgeting for continuing education, do you view it as an investment in your future or just adding in debt?
To answer these questions, I considered the reasons it was important to me to continue my education.
Future Opportunities
The number one reason I decided I had to go to law school was to open up new opportunities and increase my earning potential. The ROI differs dramatically based on the individual. Some would argue that the cost is not worth it when many schools can cost more than $150,000 to attend. My law school is half of this amount and I have put much consideration on how to pay it back.
I’m a single mom but I am lucky because I have an incredibly supportive partner. We’re not married yet but ultimately I am responsible for the care of my two children. None the less being a mom is no easy feat. Being a mom includes: working, juggling kids sports, activities, managing the household and now going to school three nights a week. This requires the organizing skills of a ninja warrior. Having a partner who supports my decision to go back to school is critical. This decision affects our entire family. I would not be able to do this without his support.
My Big Why
I am reaching for the stars. I am surrounded by inspiration and I have the mindset that I can accomplish any challenge I face. I am constantly challenging myself and continuing to work towards greatness. It is just who I am. I am not content with just getting by in life and the only way I know to improve is to continue learning. I believe that learning doesn’t end when you complete college, its a lifelong pursuit. I can never get enough. I have been coined a great student and I am proud of that. I am very curious and want to make changes to benefit others in my lifetime.
It has been something I have wanted to pursue for the last five years but my children were too young and I was going through divorce. At that time financing wasn’t available and it wasn’t possible for me to afford school at that time.
Mindset is a powerful thing. I am responsible for my financial future. I want to contribute to my family in a big way, through continuing my education I will be able to accomplish that. For me, continuing my education and investing in my education was a must. The question is not “how can I afford to, but how can I afford not to”?
