5 Ways to Stay Motivated When the Going Gets Tough

Mar 07, 2017

Life happens, there are times you may feel like you can’t go on and it would be easier to quit. The life of an entrepreneur is a continuous roller coaster, and it is sometimes difficult to stay motivated when you are dealing with the ups and downs. There is not always someone that can cover for you when you are sick, have emergencies in the family, when you are dealing with loss and many other issues that you may face. You must find the strength to get up and get dressed even when you would rather escape from the issues you face. It requires great discipline and a little help from time to time.

I live by the saying, “When life gives you lemons make lemonade.” You always have two choices, either do something about it or feel bad for yourself. It is sometimes harder than it seems, but I try to make the best out of every situation. If you are having a tough time and have trouble motivating yourself to keep going, try some of these helpful tips.

1. Achieve your goals no matter what is going on around you
Hang in there when things get tough, something good is always around the corner. This belief keeps me motivated. If I were to feel sorry for myself, I would not see opportunities that lie ahead. I have a growth mindset, so I always focus on achieving my goals and looking for ways to accomplish more.

2. Make sure you are doing what you love
Most successful people can stay motivated no matter what is going on around them. When you love what you do you can make it through even the toughest days. If you don’t believe in what you are doing you will find it difficult to stay motivated. You have to find your purpose.

3. Remember your WHY
Everyone has a why; the thing that motivates them to keep going when things get tough. It might be your family or something you want to achieve in your life. If you don’t have a WHY statement, write one. Then anytime you are struggling and feeling insecure about where you are in life, you can read that statement and remind yourself what you are working towards.

4. Make your health a priority -focus on what you can control
When things are not going so well, it’s easy for us to stop taking care of ourselves. That’s why many of us indulge in unhealthy food and drink alcohol when we are stressed. Of course, an occasional treat is fine but eating poorly and skipping out on exercise will make matters worse. Make your health a priority and realize that these are things we can control in our lives. Self-care is so important. When you take care of yourself, you can be there for your clients and other who need you.

5. Take a Break When You Need It
You could be overwhelmed because you are burned out. When you are feeling such a high level of stress from overworking or personal issues, you are less productive. You start to get flustered and make careless errors. You also are more emotional and respond poorly to negative or stressful situations. This is defiantly a sign you need a break. Even if it is something as small as taking a walk. A little fresh air can completely turn your perspective around. Many times, I feel guilty because I have so many responsibilities between work, school, and kids that I don’t take time for myself. But when I let go of the guilt and make time for myself, I feel more energized and able to accomplish more.

When you are feeling overwhelmed, evaluate your priorities and try some of these tips to help alleviate the stress to get back on track. You got this!
